Saint Gabriel Students Win Awards 

           Saint Gabriel is proud to announce several awards students won from local high schools. Seventh grade students Toni Botica and John Paul Hernandez won De La Salle’s High School’s Shining Stars awards. Toni Botica won the Brother Theodore Award for carrying out the traditions and morals of a Catholic student. John Paul Hernandez won the San Miguel Award. The San Miguel Award is for Latino students who excel in extracurricular activities and academics. Students received nominations from the teachers at Saint Gabriel and then wrote an essay describing their qualities for the award.

            Eighth grade student, Seamus Sjostrom, received the 2013 James Barda Leadership Award from Mt. Carmel High School. This award is for incoming freshman who demonstrate leadership qualities in grammar school and will carry these qualities on to high school.

Saint Gabriel Eighth Graders Receive Class Ribbons

           On May 14^th, the Saint Gabriel eighth grade class began the journey of events leading up to graduation and the end of their grade school experience. At the 8am school mass, students Vince Arredia, Colleen Barnotes, and Carly Thiel read one of their favorite stories from the year- Dreams by Susan Bosak. Class president, Matthew Carroll, then read the names of his classmates as they received their class ribbons.

            The students and their families were then treated to a reception sponsored by the seventh grade parents. The students then went on a class trip to Willis Tower and Navy Pier and enjoyed a day celebrating together. 

Saint Gabriel Students Attend Illinois State History Fair

     On May 2^nd, three eighth grade students from Saint Gabriel traveled down to Springfield to present their project on the 1958 Our Lady of Angels fire. Mary Margaret Allen, Samantha Galey, and Carly Thiel traveled from the Chicago Metro History Regional Fair in April to the state fair. They began working on their project, “The Fire that Started it All” in November and contacted survivors of the fire to gain inside sources to the fire. They then began to develop their thesis that focused on changes in schools after the tragic fire. While in Springfield, the students had the opportunity to visit the state capital and see projects from schools all over the state. We are very proud of our Shamrocks and their accomplishments!

Saint Gabriel students attend Chicago Metro History Regional Fair 

On Saturday April 13^th, six Saint Gabriel students had the opportunity to attend the Chicago Metro History Regional Fair at Northeastern University. The students had the chance to present their projects to judges from all over the city. The following students participated in the fair their projects: Natalia Almanza- “Reversal to Rewrite History”; Mary Margaret Allen, Samantha Galey, and Carly Thiel- “The Fire that Changed it All”; Brittany Miller- “Sparking up the Architectural Future”; and Makayla Steele- “H.H. Holmes- America’s First Serial Killer”. Each of these projects received top scores at the Saint Gabriel History Fair held on February 22^nd. The students enjoyed having the opportunity to see other projects and participate in the fair.

Saint Gabriel Catholic School 2^nd Trimester Honor Roll

Saint Gabriel is proud to announce the students who achieved honor roll status for the second trimester. Students in 4^th -8^th grade can achieve the honor roll and it is based on the core subjects. Principal’s Honor Roll is for students who achieved a 4.0 G.P.A. A honors is a G.P.A. of 3.5 to 3.9 and B honors is from 3.0 to 3.5 G.P.A. Below is the list of students with honor roll.             The following sixth grade students made honor roll: Principals’s- Anthony Arredia, Dominic Caponera, and Dylan Jones; A Honor Roll- Thomas Coates, Margaret Dorman, Emily Falk, Gianna Simental, and Makenzie Steele; B Honor Roll- Patrick Beyer, Colin Carpenter, Madison Gagen, and John Rudy Murlasits.

            The following fifth grade students made honor roll: Principal’s- John Clemens, Shannon Collins, and Ruby Kulovitz; B Honor Roll- Grant Hermle, Matthew Kappel, Genevieve Kerwin, Matthew McCarthy, Nicholas McCarthy, Emily McManus, Abigail McNamara, and  Mary Katherine Sjostrom.

            The following fourth grade students made honor roll: Principal’s- Jill McManus; A Honor Roll- Hannah Pigott; B Honor Roll- Matthew Fogarty, Joe Lopez, Ann McManus, Edward Jones, John Pigott, Billy Falk, Eugene Thiel.

Channel 32 Meteorologist Visits Saint Gabriel Catholic School 

On Tuesday, March 19, meteorologist Bill Bellis visited the middle school classes at Saint Gabriel Catholic School to discuss weather and what it is like to broadcast on the news. The students spoke with Mr. Bellis for over an hour, asking questions and gaining insight to some of the common weather occurrences. Mr. Bellis also shared stories with the students on his broadcasts and how he predicts the weather in Chicago. The students then checked the 9pm news that night to see a picture of themselves on TV!

Saint Gabriel Catholic School Faculty Get Their Catholic On.

     On Fridays, throughout the Lenten season, the faculty and staff at St. Gabriel wear their Catholic sweatshirts throughout the day and into the afternoon when they wrap up the week with students praying the Stations of the Cross.                                                                                               

     3rd Grade teacher, Dolly Falk stated, “We are proud of our Catholic Identity and our sweatshirts have afforded us an opportunity to celebrate who we are.  Also, I think the students are a little envious.  Many want to know where we got our shirts.”

Saint Gabriel Students Celebrate 100 Days! 

On Tuesday, February 19^th, Saint Gabriel’s kindergarten and first grade class learned all about the number one hundred. The day started off for the students with teachers Mrs. Lambert, Ms. Adams, and Principal Mr. Morgan dressing up as if they were one hundred years old! The students then took a parade around the school visiting each of the classrooms. In kindergarten, the students took pictures of themselves and covered it with cotton balls to pretend they were one hundred years old. In first grade, the students made batches of trail mix with one hundred pieces in each batch.

                In the afternoon, both classes came back together and looked at groups of one hundred items, such as Lego’s and blocks. The students grouped them together and counted to make sure there were one hundred! The classes did other projects to celebrate one hundred days, such as making a paperclip chain and guessing how long it could go. The kindergartens and first graders had a fun-filled day learning about the number one hundred!
